Progress Through Movement
Sometimes patients have been in treatment for a while but aren’t making the progress they’re looking for. Today I saw a woman who had been in speech therapy for three years but was still struggling to activate her entire tongue.
This is one of the reasons why I love to incorporate movement into my sessions - we flipped her upside down on her back and we used the balance board while we did her exercises. All throughout her previous therapy sessions she’d always been seated at a desk, and her body was craving movement!
Even though she’d had a tongue tie release years ago, and she was able to move her tongue adequately, I wanted her to be able to use her tongue more cohesively. The back of her tongue still wasn’t activated and moving along with the tip. Getting her into different positions, especially upside down, allowed us to wake up her midline and get her in different planes of gravity.
It’s never a bad idea to come at treatment from a different perspective, in this case, being upside down made all the difference!
How have you utilized movement as a patient, or as a provider? If you’ve hit a wall in treatment, feel free to shake things up a little!
