On Neurodivergent Kids
Can I take a moment to suggest a shift in perspective?
When we’re working with our neurodivergent children, I think it’s important to move away from trying to fix or adapt them to the current world. Our world, let’s face it, it’s a pretty broken place. Making them do the adjusting might not be the best approach.
Instead of trying to “fix” or force them into a mold that society has given them, what if we focus on what these children can teach us about connection and understanding?
Now, the biohacker in me wants to problem-solve by looking at what’s going on with their mitochondria, what does their environment look like as far as toxins, all of those biological factors. Yet, I think at some level those things are still just scratching the surface, and we as parents and providers need to pause and think about the deeper questions. What are these kids teaching us to seek the answer for? How are they challenging us to get out of our comfort zones and medical framework of knowledge, so that we can get to the core issues?
Our kiddos have a lot to teach us, if we’ll take the time to listen.
