Recovering from Airway Trauma

A traumatic airway event doesn’t have to be intentionally harmful for it to have been damaging. Whether you’ve experienced trauma from an airway procedure, expansion appliance, jaw surgery, dental work, whatever it is, it’s very important for you to verbalize and acknowledge what happened to you.

It’s healing and empowering when you speak up for your body.

Voicing your experience may not change anything that is happening in regards to the current situation - it could be you are recovering from an injury and undergoing treatment, but still those feelings of violation and suffering keep coming up. Still, speaking up about the emotions surrounding those events can be really beneficial.

A few years ago I took a course about anxiety, and it was empowering to realize that women were significantly less injured, from a mental health standpoint, if they fought back when they were attacked. Even if they weren’t successful at fighting off their attacker, they still suffered less, emotionally speaking, if they defended themselves.

I think it’s important that we fight for our bodies, even if it doesn’t necessarily change the outcome, or if the event is already in the past, there is still value in showing up for your body.

How have you dealt with trauma in your own life? There are a lot of great somatic healing methods out there, movement and getting outside are a great place to start. Seek out healthy ways of healing, remember that you matter, and know that emotional health is just as much a part of your journey as your physical health.
