Let's talk about motivation!

There are lots of good ways to motivate your kids to be consistent with their myo exercises, but I want to take a second first to talk about motivation for you as the parent. To be honest, we all know that it is extremely hard to add one more thing to an already full schedule. You're making meals, going to work, taking the kids to soccer practice, keeping the house clean (or at least trying to!), and a whole host of other things - who has time to add myo exercises in? Plus, sometimes our kids aren’t excited to do them either.

That’s why I want to challenge you to find ways to keep yourself on track, not to just think about doing the exercises, but actually do them with your kids. Here are some ideas for you!

Remember why you’re doing the exercises in the first place

There is a reason you started on this journey, what was it?

  • Write out a short “mission statement” for yourself, something like, “these exercises are going to help Abby sleep better,” or, “I want Jane to not struggle with her ADHD so much at school.”

  • Post the mission statement somewhere you’ll see it to spur you on!

Incentives

Your kiddos get sticker charts or extra screen time, what about you? You know best what would motivate you - but here are some ideas…

  • An extra piece of chocolate or cup of coffee

  • Getting to cross it off your to-do list

  • Talking with other parents in the online community about your progress

Make it fun

Play and laugh together, you’re more likely to do things that you both enjoy.

  • Have a staring contest while doing the exercises, first one to laugh loses!

  • Add it to a board game like Checkers, do the exercises each turn

Tie it to something you or your kids already do.

There are lots of things we do everyday already, coupling the exercises with those things will make it more of a habit and less of a chore. For example:

  • While they wash their hands or take a bath

  • During a drive in the car

  • Before turning on the TV (or while they watch!)

  • As they put their shoes on

Keep it simple

It’s easy to get overwhelmed, but done is better than perfect.

  • Practice throughout the day for shorter amounts of time

  • Write reminders on sticky notes and place them around the house

Whatever tips you choose, I am proud of you for making these exercises a priority - your child is worth it! Your hard work and consistency will make a difference and you will be so thankful that you put in the time.
