Hormones and Burping
Perimenopause is not a stage most women look forward to, and unfortunately those normal hormonal changes can lead to some very uncomfortable symptoms. A friend who is going through perimenopause reached out to me because she has been experiencing a persistent desire to burp. What is going on?!
She is experiencing a change in her hormone ratios, and with that you can have changes in tension and relaxation of certain muscle groups. Hormones can lead you to see changes in your cricopharygnes, which is the muscle that you have that opens and closes for swallowing (you can picture what the muscle is doing by making a fist and squeezing your fingers together to close the opening, and loosening your fingers to let food pass).
As your muscles are changing due to hormones you might have that feeling of starting to get more air, or you could experience other sensations such as acid reflux. Of course, it’s always a good idea to seek out a speech language pathologist, or get a consult with your ENT, but in this case I recommended that she first start with looking at her hormones.
Your hormones can be tricky, and when they change or are unbalanced they can cause a lot of issues! Have you gotten your hormones checked recently?
