Listening to the body
When it comes to the body and what it needs, we have to honor and respect what the body is showing us.
We might be able to quickly identify that a patient needs a certain type of intervention - we see all the signs and symptoms - but if we intervene without first getting the permission of the body that can result in trauma.
As providers and as parents, let’s be mindful of our roles, and keep in mind the trauma cycle that many people may experience. Just because I can do something to/for a patient doesn’t mean I have their body’s permission. As a parent, you might be hesitant to move forward with a treatment because your child doesn’t seem ready.
Take a minute and consider if the therapeutic intervention is really what’s best at this time.
I spoke earlier with someone who had a painful experience when another provider did what they were ABLE to do, but it was too much and the body wasn’t ready for it. Please be patient, mindful, and listen for the quiet “yes” and “no” of the whole system, not just one part.
Allowing our bodies the honor, respect, and time they need is part of the journey, and rushing to the finish line is not the goal. We can be patient and we can give space.
